Motorola has inaugurated a new plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, with an area of 270,000 square feet. The company has initially invested 1.72 billion Rupees (US$42.5 million; US$1=48.6 Rupees) in this new facility, Nikkei Electronics Asia reported. The new facility is projected to produce mainly GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile phones.

The new facility is Motorola's first plant in India to incorporate R&D, software, and manufacturing operations and is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 12 million mobile phones and 6,500 base stations, according to India Times. Other mobile phone brands having invested in Sriperumbudur include Nokia and Samsung, also according to India Times.
